It starts with my own journey to diagnosis.
In the summer of 2025, an MRI solved the mystery behind a slow progression of symptoms that have plagued me for over 8 years—symptoms which have hijacked my life, from navigating day-to-day errands to forcing aside dreams and ambition in the face of uncertainty. The road to finding answers was lonely, confusing, embarrassing, and exhausting, so when the day of diagnosis finally came, it was emotional. Turns out, a brain tumor was behind the insidious onset of issues, and part of the healing process for me has been a deep reflection on advocacy, healthcare, and the status quo.

The system is broken.
After pressing for answers for years and getting little more than quick fixes for the easy symptoms, my diagnosis finally came when I took medical leave from work, threw every ounce of effort I had into searching for a root cause, and quite literally begged for the brain MRI that would unlock the help I needed.
To be clear, I don’t place blame on any individuals but am deeply disappointed in the system. There are moments in my story that shine—where real heroes stayed late, brainstormed with me, and stepped back to consider the bigger picture. Moments when a stray idea provided one more clue or a tight hug picked up my spirits. I believe that the individuals who power healthcare are operating with good intentions in pursuit of patient care, doing the best they can in a very complex ecosystem.
But the system has evolved to prioritize the needs of business over patients—with incentives for efficiency and profit overshadowing patient care. As a consequence, today’s providers are experiencing alarmingly high rates of burnout, the sacred patient-provider relationship is being tested, and patients are met with a fragmented experience that gets harder to navigate as time progresses and symptoms accumulate.
Patients are at a disadvantage.
A great paradox of healthcare is that patients are expected to move their own healthcare forward but are gravely under-resourced when it comes to having the education, advocacy skills, and tools to do so.
Patients need a solution that moves with them through this complex ecosystem.
That’s where Advokit comes in.
We can learn from each other.
There is no how-to guide for healthcare, and a lot of us waste precious time and money learning through trial and error. But there’s power in numbers, and there’s something we can learn from YOU. Your stories, your tips, your questions.
With your help, I’m confident that we can hack healthcare for you, me, and the next patient looking for answers.
