When your care gets stuck, try this.
Nobody teaches you how to be a patient. You're at a disadvantage from the minute you enter that appointment because you're not feeling your best. Add to that the layers of bureaucracy, the complex lingo, and the confusing economics of the system, and it's no wonder patients feel lost or helpless.
I've learned that when your care gets stuck, there are 3 things you can start doing to help yourself:
-
My conversations with doctors have highlighted how much they rely on patients to be able to deliver their story in a concise, organized way at the start of the appointment--including meds you're on, why you're on them, and other treatments you've had for the issue.
-
Start your conversations with a goal to center you and your provider on what success looks like. If you only have 15 minutes to make progress on your care, it helps to have an agenda and know exactly what you need to say and ask before you go in.
-
Ideally, that means taking a friend or family member to help listen and document, but if that doesn't work, try recording your provider's instructions. I've been pleasantly surprised with how many providers are comfortable with this as long as patients are transparent about the ask.
The good news? Advokit's got all the tools baked in to help you execute on these tips.
